Helping to show my audience the meaning on Nexus and my chosen cafe’s social cause.
This is probably one of the shortest blog posts I have ever written, being a extension to my previous Video Development post. As one of our main deliverables for Cafe for the Future we needed to create a video introducing and explain our cafe concept and our chosen social cause using Adobe softwares. I wanted to design my video based on using type as this is an area I haven’t experimented with type as of yet. Kinetic Type is the effect I used helping me to connect my messages and frames.
Below is my finished video promoting Nexus.
I have gained a lot of positive feedback from showing my studio peers, family and friends my Nexus visual. Looking back at my video two weeks after producing my finished piece has really inspired me to work on my new D&AD video. I am proud of my efforts and believe that anything is possible if you work hard enough.
One of my final deliverables for D&AD.
I have been working on designing and developing my John Lewis concept video for Design Competition. After researching the history of John Lewis, visiting the store and looking at their charity, interviewing one of their most successful Stratford City colleagues, looking deep into how they advertise John Lewis for important occasions, their biggest competitors, their own brand style and one of the key elements of the brief, Urbanites I have come with a concept helping Urbanites “busy people and workers in the city” to find an easier way to access the John Lewis store. I have thought about how to give the branding a younger feel using colour and style as well as including a user experience which today is a massive success for big companies such as John Lewis.
The concept of home and family living appears to be one of John Lewis’s fundamental areas of design and interest. I have touched on how they use messaging through their visuals and have worked on how my application will fit with their brand style.
I have also designed a logo for my application which may be changed and edited slightly since making my video and video effects. I had noticed how john lewis likes to use the circle shape throughout introducing new aspects of their brand. Either being stickers on packages, window stickers or announcements online.
No matter what area of John Lewis I researched the concept of family and home living as well as the colour green and circles continued to make an appearance. I kept all of these areas in mind when it came to designing.
I wanted to use type to express the sentimental messaging throughout my video. After teaching myself how to use Premier Pro and After Effects for my previous project had really helped me to work on video efficiently and pretty quickly when it came to panning my text in and out and aligning it with my chosen audio file. I chose this particular piece of music due to it’s emotional feel and sound which I feel works perfectly for John Lewis advertising.
After finishing the type parts of my video I realised something was missing and it would look better if I could somehow use the popular circle shape throughout helping to bring my video to life. After watching many tutorials online I followed one in particular which teaches you how to build your own motion graphics for video content. I followed this step by step and made a series of animations using my chosen colours. This has really added a delicate touch to my video and overall I am over the moon with my advertisement.
below is my completed video, introducing customers to the new application I have designed for John Lewis.
Feedback & Reflection
I have shown my video to Tahira and a few of my studio peers and family members to get some feedback from individuals and also someone who knows the brand very well. Tahira feedback: she loves the feel and the freshness I have added to the brand and how the words touch on what John Lewis stands for. She is interested to see the application stills and my gifs which are the next step for me to complete. There are a few small changes I will be making to the video once I have finished and perfected my application and gif designs.
Designing new poster designs. I had created a variety of posters designs using some of my favourite patterns I had created first terms for OGP’s branding. i have now changed the posters and added some new ideas using different type layouts, kerning and tracking to help bring more feeling to the designs. I have also decided to take away any box capacities due to it changing the patterns and backgrounds completely.

“We would like to have a series of posters designs that would work well alone but also together.”
After reading my notes back it helped me to change and create a poster series which would work professionally as a collective. Due to designing so many patterns I was told to continue experimenting with all my patterns to see which ones would work best. I have also added the logo to the poster to put the logo into context. This works so well, I definitely prefer the second logo to my first.
I have spaced the type similarly on each poster and used the ampersand symbol as well as my own simply designed balance symbol to split the posters up perfectly. I feel the posters have a more delicate feel and the type works well for the OG pie brand. Nicole & Whitney are also happy with these.
I am looking to add the tagline to the posters to see how this will look as well as designing some packaging next using the logo, tagline and patterns.
I have been working on OGP’s official logo design. After designing the first steps for OGP’s branding for my first term project I have been asked to make some changes. Here is a reminder of my first logo design.
Nicole & Whitney were very happy with my idea for the logo design. They felt I had touched on their vision 100% however wanted me to try to edit my design so it looked more like a readable O&G. I have experimented with some different typefaces and thicknesses to create some new versions.

“look into designing the branding so it has more of a feminine touch. Keeping the infinity symbol and the togetherness aspect as it’s important.”
Below are the four versions I have been working on keeping the infinity symbol as a strong part of the logo and changing the figure of eight to read much clearer experimenting with making the logo thicker and thinner.
After sending these examples Nicole & Whitney were really impressed with the thinner logo. This fits best due to it looking more feminine, delicate and professional.
I am looking to speak with Zara regarding the tagline as the girls were really impressed with her tagline. Once I have conformation from Zara I will be working on adding the tagline to my logo design and putting the logo into context, i.e. posters, branding etc.
The perks of working for Oh Gee Pie.
Last night I was invited to visit Blighty’s Cafe where OGP’a Kitchen is located. Their first official baking workshop was taking place here this evening. This gave me a chance to have a deeper look into the company what they do and get a feel for their vision as well as experience researching the brand in a fun way. Blighty Cafe is in Tottenham Hale. A intimate space filled with culture and creativity.
We all had the chance to get to know one another before the workshop which made the evening very relaxing and sociable. My auntie and cousin came along with me which was a nice added touch to the evening.
After exploring Blighty Cafe we got started making and baking with the OGP ladies. Everything had been set up for us along with snacks and champagne. Below are some photographs I took throughout the workshop.
This was a way for me to have a relaxing evening away from a computer screen and my books but to also get some important research done and have the chance to speak with Nicole and Whitney about my development so far.

For our cafe for the future brief we have to create our own user experience. I have decided to create a interactive world map which helps customers to discover information linked to the underground artists at Nexus. I have designed the world map using geometric shapes sticking to my original theme linking culture throughout my project. The map is made up of the five main continents making it easy for people to follow.
The yellow triangles light up indicating which parts of the world different artists are from who have previously performed at Nexus and the turquoise lights up for the current weeks performers.
After taping the chosen triangle a drop down menu appears. the first triangle reads the performers name, the second being a link to their bio, the third linked to their social media e.g. twitter, instagram, soundcloud and their own official websites and lastly a play button which allows you to listen to a short 30 second demo of their music giving customers a sneak peak to their unique sounds.
I wanted to build this digital interactive map to build awareness of the amazing diverse underground artists at Nexus helping to build an audience for those with talent. As well as giving the customers an understanding of what our event nights hold. My idea was to have this on an interactive screen at my cafe as well as on the website.
This is a draft animation showing how my application will work. I will be adding more frames to improve my digital application which will also make it more understandable for viewers and users.
This has been one of the best designing parts of my project. It took me a while to come up with the concept for my user experience however I am really happy with how my digital world map has turned out. I will be adding to this for my final hand in.
One of the main aspects of our studio project was based on creating a video advertising our cafe and it’s social cause. I haven’t used Premiere Pro or After Effects since my first year at University and that was a one day lesson which I have to admit has not stayed fresh in my mind. So before creating a full animation piece I had to teach myself these adobe softwares, starting from scratch which was very time consuming but well worth it. I am proud of myself for creating a video and teaching myself the above softwares in just two days. Anything is possible when you put your mind to it.
To help me to create the perfect video explaining all the relevant information to promote my cafe we were given a story board template to follow, I have sketched out what I would Like to include in my video in the style I would like to do so. Type missing from my design work so far I am looking to produce my video using just type and shapes.

After giving myself limitations as to how I am looking to create my video I did some research online looking into type animation videos. I had found many music videos which were linked to using a technique called kinetic type, the type is animated with a connection link this would work perfectly for my concept . Check my previous blog post Branded Movies for examples.
I then moved on to watching tutorials on Linda.com, YouTube and Adobe linked with kinetic type and how to use Premiere Pro, After Effect and linking the two programmes together to create an animated video.
Below are some screen shots of my animation in the process.
After linking the two programmes together it was easy for me to add the compositions and fitting the frames with the music I’ve used. I am looking to add some finishing touches to my video before posting the finished video on my blog. This has helped me to gain the confidence to make more animation pieces in the future and also my design competition brief.
For our Cafe for the Future brief one of our final elements must be linked to User Experience. I have to admit this has been one of the hardest task so far. coming up with an idea which helps customers to understand the cafe concept with a purpose. I have wrote a list of ideas which has helped me to think creatively towards designing this.

I thought of creating an inspirational envelop wall which customers can interact with. My first idea was linked to the question. How can I get my customers to understand my cafes social cause and concept? I thought about having a wall filled with different envelopes made from geometric shapes (squares & triangles) the customers can open an envelop and write on the card inside. the card has two sides, one says Theme & other says Genre. Every customer can have the chance to become an events management leader. After having a one to one discussion with my tutor Sara we came to the realisation that I was trying to do too much, it was a good idea just too complex.
My second idea was to keep my envelope wall idea but twist it’s concept. In each envelop there are two cards, one for you write on and the other card is for you to keep. Exchanging positive messages is a huge part of connecting with others and bringing people together. I felt this would be a nice touch for my cafe due to it being a place for all. Below are some of my sketches linked to my envelope ideas.
My third idea was linked to how can I use my envelop wall in a digital way? I could maybe design the envelopes so they were displayed on a screen digitally they would move slowly around the screen. Customers can chose an envelope to interact with by tapping the envelop an artists music would play with links to their social medias.
My fourth idea was a history wall, revealing the underground artists featured at the evening events at Nexus a way of promoting the artists and their voices.
Above are many ideas, however I cannot picture any of the above working perfectly. Leaving my cafe project alone for a while helped me to push my ideas to one side and give my mind a break for a while. It then came to me out of no where that the universal and cultural aspects were not clearly represented throughout my cafe unless you knew the hidden meaning behind geometric shapes. Maybe if I use the concept of the world map to help build my user experience it will help views to have a better understanding of Nexus.
Last Friday we all displayed our experimental work, sketchbooks and final pieces for our second studio project and our scheduled exhibition. I was proud of my studio peers everyone has worked so hard. I had previously set up my space but due to finishing my video for Nexus I was asked to move my work next to the big screen so all my work would be displayed together. Don’t mind the photo quality, the lighting wasn’t so great plus I had the most terrible day printing my exhibition pieces using the university prints, they do not pick up the colour grey very well. For my final hand in I will definitely be reprinting these at a professional printers.
Today was an important day not just for displaying work but for signing my OGP contract. Nicole & Whitney had come to meet with Emily and I to get everything finalised. This has relaxed me and made everything official for my internship. I have to admit I am very happy with both my displays, including my oh gee pie display. The girls were very proud of my efforts and happy with how my designs had come along since our last meeting. We have agreed on a new logo design and posters.
deciding | conversations with Sara always help me to move forward.
After speaking to Sara about my project and showing her how far I had come with my design process so far, I was told that it would be a good idea to experiment with my original logo design, to use maybe just black and white. I moved away from my original design as I felt I could design something a lot better.
I have had a couple of very indecisive days focusing on which logo will work best for my cafe. I have designed about 40 & chose 3 to work with to see how well they looked with my poster designs. Below are my three best logos.
After adding these two logos to my unfinished poster designed made me realise they wouldn’t work as they looked as if my brand was sports related and had a similar look to a sports brand such as adidas. This disappointed me as I had worked hard on these and had designed them based on the music element of my cafe creating a play button using my chosen geometric shapes.
This has now left me with one favourite design. My N for nexus, made from a series of triangles. I also added this to one of my unfinished poster designs to see how it would look and I feel this works perfectly. The logo some how illuminates my poster designs adding the element of promoting talented artists and creatives as it unintentionally looks very much like a star.
The logo brings a finish touch to my poster designs adding the element of promoting talented artists and creatives as it unintentionally looks very much like a star.
Having many different logos to chose from has really helped me to add more meaning and feeling to my brand. I am happy I have done many logos and have tired four in before choosing my final. I am looking to use this logo to create some good moving visuals for my brand concept video.
